The DAAD is one of the largest organization funding the international exchange of students and researchers in the world. It supports over 100,000 German and foreign students und researchers around the world each year and it is making the DAAD the largest funding organization of its kind. It also promotes internationalization efforts at German universities, helps developing countries to build their own systems of higher education and supports German Studies and German language programs abroad. Its budget is formed mainly from the federal funding of various ministries, primarily the German Federal Foreign Office, but also from the European Union and a number of enterprises, organizations and foreign governments. The funding offers range from a year abroad for undergraduates to doctoral programs, from internships to visiting lectureships, and from information gathering visits to assisting with the establishment of new universities abroad.
